Coolamon is a town located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated approximately 170 kilometres southwest of the state capital, Sydney. The history of Coolamon dates back to the early 19th century when European settlers arrived in the area.

Early History

The first European to explore the area was Charles Sturt in 1829. However, it was not until 1846 that a small group of settlers established a village in the area. The village was named Coolamon, which is an Aboriginal word meaning "dish" or "bowl".

Initially, the area was used for grazing sheep, but in the 1860s, gold was discovered in nearby areas, including Wagga Wagga and Temora. This led to an influx of people into Coolamon, and the town grew rapidly.

Growth and Development

By the turn of the 20th century, Coolamon had become a thriving town with a population of over 2,000. The town had a post office, several banks, a hospital, a school, and a railway station. The railway line, which was completed in 1891, connected Coolamon with other major towns in the region.

During the 20th century, Coolamon continued to grow and develop. In the 1920s, the town experienced a boom in agriculture, particularly in the production of wheat and other grains. This led to the establishment of several agricultural cooperatives, which helped to support the local economy.

During World War II, Coolamon played an important role in the war effort. The town was a major centre for the production of military aircraft, and many of the local residents worked in the factories that produced these planes. After the war, the town continued to grow, with new industries and businesses moving into the area.
